Information aobut Mayor's "Street Smart" Safety Program

Are you “Street Smart?”  As part of Mayor Warren’s commitment to creating a culture of safety and changing the way people behave on our streets, the City has launched the “Street Smart” website.  Visit www.newtonma.gov/streetsmart to learn tips and rules of the road for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, and start a conversation with your family and friends about how Newton residents of all ages and abilities can be safe and courteous on our roads.  The Planning Department is organizing a series of contests and partnering with local businesses to offer great prizes.  Congratulations to Madeleine Aquilina and Rachel Brown for winning the March contest!  For a chance to win our next contest, check out the website for the answer to the question and then send us an email at streetsmart@newtonma.gov with your name, age, home email address or phone number, and what you think is the correct answer.

Support Newton's Global Education Leadership Fund

In Newton we are lucky to have many wonderful programs supporting our children. One such program at the two high schools is the Global Education Leadership Fund (GELF), which benefits lower income Newton students aspiring to participate in our international educational programs.
Here are three ways in which you can support GELF:

NPS 2011-12 Out of Assigned District Statement

The following was submitted by the Education Center, 100 Walnut Street, Newton:

The Newton Public Schools considers applications for students to transfer to schools outside of their home district. It is the goal of the school system to grant to the degree possible requests for out-of-assigned district placements. Impact on enrollment, staffing and space availability now and in the future are key considerations. Out-of-assigned district placements for students who wish to attend a school in Newton other than his/her district school are limited. Such placements will be made on a space available basis only. In addition to Newton residents, members of NTA Units A, B, C, D, E, NESA, or the Custodial union may also apply for placement of their children in a Newton Public School.

CAP Volunteers Needed

The Child Assault Prevention (CAP) program in Newton is looking for committed and dedicated child advocates to present its personal safety curriculum in local elementary schools.

Join up with current and experienced volunteer Prevention Specialists to teach children to recognize and respond to verbal, physical and sexual assault and abuse. Potential volunteers are community members who believe that children have the right to information, skills and the support of adults. We offer a flexible schedule to volunteers who enjoy teamwork and can make a yearlong commitment of three or four mornings a month.

Aug., 2011 - Letter from NPS Superintendent David Fleishman re: Preliminary MCAS results

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Newton received preliminary scores this week from the 2011 MCAS tests. These initial results are unofficial and will not be publicly released until mid-September, when you will receive your child’s scores. As a district, we have a lot to be proud of. The Newton Public Schools earned a "very high" No Child Left Behind (NCLB) performance rating in both Mathematics and English Language Arts. The overwhelming majority of our students achieved performance levels at proficient or advanced on both of these MCAS tests. Based on the preliminary MCAS scores, we are pleased that this year the district made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. We are in Improvement Status until we achieve AYP for two consecutive years.
