Dear Underwood Families,
Did you hear we’re having a carnival next week?! Just kidding! I know we’ve been in touch a lot about volunteering but for those who haven’t had the chance to experience the Underwood Spring Carnival, it is an enormous 100% volunteer run event and requires a small time commitment from nearly every Underwood family to make it happen.
This is the only event all year when we ask for this level of family participation, and we promise it will be worth it when you see how happy it makes our students!
We still need about 35 more volunteers: Sign up here! We look forward to seeing you next Friday, June 3rd from 3-7pm.
The carnival is open to the public, so tell your non-Underwood friends, too!

2022-23 Volunteer Opportunities
We are still looking to fill a few leadership roles on the PTO that deal with important topics but require a relatively low time commitment. THANK YOU to our 5th grade parent volunteers whose families are graduating from Underwood and vacating these leadership roles or others we have already filled – Rocio Calvo, Jennifer Gistrak, Anne-Marie Gravel and Alex Rolfe. You can read more details about the roles listed below HERE. If you are interested in one or more of the following positions, please email us at underwoodpto@gmail.com.
- Food Service Advisory Group Liaison
- FORJ (Families Organizing for Racial Justice) Liaison
- Safe Routes to School Liaison
- SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) Liaison
Lastly, we cannot thank you enough for your support this year. Thanks to our community the Underwood PTO is thriving. Just this year we have funded three Creative Arts & Sciences experiences for each student, new library books, staff allocations, an incredible teacher appreciation luncheon and “Stock the Staff Room” event, gift cards to support families in our community, Underwood movie night, flowers for the garden, a Gaga ball pit, Bubble Barge entertainment for the picnic, and the year isn’t over yet! You should all be very proud of how you have contributed to our community in ways big and small.
All our best,
Amy Davis and Laura Goldworm
PTO Co-Presidents

FUEL Program Ongoing Food Donations
The Underwood PTO collects food donations on an ongoing basis to benefit the FUEL Program, which distributes a weekly bag of food to Newton families, including those in the Underwood community. We invite Underwood families to support our neighbors and fellow Newton residents by contributing non perishable items for distribution. Click here to find the list of accepted items (please do not drop off any items not listed).
Parent volunteers Nicole Peterson and Diane Martel collect donations of the above items at 34 Eldredge Street (blue house directly across the street from the school) or 14 Shornecliffe Road on the front porch. For the month of June we are encouraging each grade to bring a specific item to ensure a variety of donations – see below. Please direct any questions to Nicole at nmprairie@gmail.com.
